Well, I see this from another perspective: when I buy a phone, I take care to choose one with great (expected) CM support. Having 39 devices to choose from, never made me feel very much constraint in my phone choice.

Indeed me too. When I get a new phone, I always look at the supported device list first.
If it's supported, I buy it, unlock the bootloader, install cyangenmod, fdroid (https://f-droid.org), and then finally freecyngn (https://github.com/mar-v-in/freecyngn).

That's probably the closest you can get to a practical version of replicant for now.
