We are using opensuse 11.2. I used the 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop kernel.

Here is what I did. Maybe this will point out the difference:

(1) I downloaded the following file from the OpenSuse website:
openSUSE-11.2-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso

(2) I put the file on a USB stick:
dd if=openSUSE-11.2-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso of=/dev/sdb

(3) I installed the operating system on the d: partition

(4) Once the system was up, I installed the Nvidia driver following the instructions on this website:

http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA_drivers

(This asked me to update quite a few packages and I went ahaed and updated them.)

(5) Just in case, I did an update in the command line:
sudo zypper up
(This installed quite a few packages again, since the GUI ignores some of the repos that this command does not.)

That's it. Now my system is working just fine.

Is there anything that you did/did not do?

No, I'm pretty sure that is not. I used to use 64 bit and that worked perfectly fine too. The only reason why I switched is because OpenSuse likes to install 32bit packages even if you use the 64bit version (e.g. flash, Skype, etc.)

There is a 64 bit flash. My script installs that - here the variant for the stable flash releases:

http://kanotix.com/files/install-flash-local.sh

It runs as user, checks for a recent enough distro to install flash 10, old 32 bit you get flash 9.

You can "taboo" the flash rpm from suse and install the 64-bit beta from Adobe. (Just drop it in the /usr/lib64/browser-plugins directory.)

As far as skype goes, I don't think they even have a 64-bit client available (skype that is) so ya it would need to have compatibility libs to run.

Thanks for the tips, but the problem is not that I cannot install it. I bought this netbook for my sister, who is sick of windows and has nothing to do with computers. So, I was looking for the best solution for her. Also, there are a lots of things out there that are not quite ok with 64bit right now. E.g. flash64 does not have a hardware acceleration built in, whereas the 32bit beta has. Skype comes as a 64bit version, but only for Ubuntu. It can be installed using 32bit packages, but I experienced some stability issues wit that. So, I think I will keep this netbook with the 32bit Opensuse for my sister, and will keep using the 64bit Ubuntu on my own laptop.

P.S. are you using the latest ASUS BIOS? (x18, I think)
