          It would be a slimmer, more targeted abstraction layer based on modern principles instead of a giant abstraction layer based on principles from the '80s that can't make many assumptions because different APIs it supports require things working in incompatible ways. A slim abstraction over Vulkan, though, could make a lot of assumptions about how that abstraction works to ensure it's all optimized properly on modern hardware.
