    @V!NCENT

I think they are referring to that 2009 post made by TTimo.

I really don't understand what the people are bitching about. Doom3 and Quake4 were great games that delivered exactly what they promised. I don't need a poor man's movie with a moral, and adding puzzles to a 3d shooter does not a good game make.
I think we should not buy a game "just because is on Linux". For example Oil Rush was an OK game, did people got overwhelmed!? I'm not sure. Yes, it would make it nicer to be on Linux, yet is hard I think for them with no proper tools to produce a version that will do more than to compile on Linux.

Proper tools? I was under the impression the id Tech engines carried Linux support (or something very like it) for enhanced portability.

And while I agree that we shouldn't buy games just because they're on Linux, it's an attitude that doesn't seem popular here on Phoronix.

What do you mean "Oil Rush was an OK game", it hasn't even been released yet, the game is still in development.

As far as Rage goes I still hope that TTimo does come through and make a native Linux binary but I can at least tell you that the game runs (seemingly flawlessly from my short bit of testing) on Linux through wine pretty much out of the box. The only thing I had to do was setup audio to run through "emulation" to get any sound.

          • I'm an id fan so don't care what reviewers (who play 100's of games) write. I haven't played Borderlands or Fallout 3 either. But I won't buy Rage until there is a Linux binary to download.

            • Looks like Rage is a kickass shoot-stuff-to-shit schooter, with kickass texture visuals and awesome car combat multiplayer.

The rest is just all for variation. They put a lot of effort into adjusting weapons, so you can create your own dream arsonal, like for example shooting grenades with your dual barrel shotgun, so you'll end up experimenting with your new dual grenade launcher combo.

Quests are just looking for reasons to shoot more shit to hell (chapters in the porn-grade story). The enemies are crafted to be chalanging objects to shoot, not smart tactical guys.

              Definately going to buy

              • It's an id game. What did you expect? Deep plot and fleshed out NPCs? The game is what id does best: a first-class, extremely fun to play FPS action game with system requirements that don't exclude 99.9% of PC owners.

                • I would instantly buy it if there was a Linux version.
I'm not really interested in it enough right now to buy a Windows version.

If there isn't a Linux version, I'll probably only buy it once it's $20 or less on Steam.

                  • I remember the days of wonderful story-driven games like Hovertank 3d, Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Quake, Doom2, Quake2 (crash! Defeat the Makron! Jump on the crates! Pick up a weapon!) with strong character development and a social commentary.

Now they've ruined it. Instead of a mixture of puzzles, musical interludes, and economic critique, we get a game where you run around and shoot monsters.

ID, you have betrayed us! This is NOT what we expected!

                    • As long as it still uses OpenGL just use wine. There is no real performance penalty when you play those games, like Doom 3 via wine worked very soon after release at normal speed. D3D games will get much slower, but OpenGL can be mapped 1:1 and therefore it should not be more than 1-2% difference.
