  • Linux As A Bellwether For Software Success

This article from two years ago popped up in the sidebar lately. It doesn’t seem to have its own discussion thread, so I will talk about it here.

First of all, as soon as someone proclaims “Linux is too complicated/fragmented to support”, you can immediately conclude that their software is proprietary. Free software doesn’t have nearly as much trouble supporting hundreds of different Linux distros.

Secondly, I googled “c4 engine” to find out what had happened to their product, and wouldn’t you know it, they had shut it down not long after, leaving all their customers and users in the lurch.

This happens all the time with proprietary software, of course. But the fact that they dropped Linux support first--and tried to blame Linux for it, not their own flawed business model--was a definite sign of the trouble to come.

Linux is a standard against which you can measure software quality: if your software cannot support it, it reflects on your product, not on Linux.
