Well, it looks like they intend to make libudev optional, it just hasn't been done yet.
I can't get any numbers on size of a static binary though:
Debian squeeze doesn't have libxkbcommon, so I can't just apt-get it.
Edit: Nor does wheezy, just experimental--and libxkbcommon is tagged rc-buggy.
