I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been a thing a decade ago. Seems obvious enough that I just assumed it was already set up this way, but I've never shut down a system with more than 8 mounted drives, and they were in RAID so it's not like it makes sense to asynchronously shut them down. So, I've never really encountered this being an issue.
