How is requiring driver signing not hinder open source development? I would even go so far that the sole purpuse of this mechanism is to prevent nouvou like drivers or maybe modified original drivers are prevented.

Nvidia is also fighting against counterfeit cards, and they don't want users flashing custom VBIOS'. So I don't think their sole purpose is to defeat nouveau.
