Pavel Machek has expressed an interest, but I don't know if he will follow through.
I know. I didn't know that someone has expressed interest in maintaining it so that's nice. *Virtual hug* for even considering it.

I should point out that I'm fully aware that removing it will have next to no effect for 99% of Linux desktop users. They just install a distribution and run programs. Outside of maybe having an issue with AMDGPU-Pro or the Nvidia driver sometime before systemd, they won't ever use kernel scrolling. Most people don't do kernel tweaks for reasons like we all do or go "Ohh. An RC kernel. And it supports BTRFS ZSTD. Total Sweetness. What could possibly go wrong?"

He lives on the American west coast. It's on fire. Here's a current fire map. He's also in Oregon which is dealing with a lot of police brutality protests. When one is surrounded by what looks like the apocalypse, people and nature, biblical references are sure to follow

As long as the kernel doesn't crash before getting to userspace, sure, that's a fine suggestion. I assume they did this change because they do most of their testing on VMs with vitrual terminals so they can rely on the scrolling features there versus running on bare metal where you do need scrollback. If you've ever had the kernel or system crash during what I call the grey zone between GRUB and systemd, which has happened to me in the past, you'd probably be more against this too. That grey zone when running on bare metal is the only time this code is useful because the init sytem can be configured to fire up a virtual terminal as step one...unless the init system crashes and then we're back to square one.

MT. VERNON, OH—According to sources in a dark, mysterious land known as the "Midwest," one visitor from California found himself horrified when he left his hotel to go for a walk and found that all the trees were on fire. He began to hyperventilate as he collapsed on the trail in panic and cried out for help.

It will be a burning release, I'm sure...

No scrolling back! We will burn you, Linus.

    Who will fork kmscon/frecon?

Does that mean the regression will be fixed for the 5.9 release?
