Isn't this similar to Lennarts vision of app installation?

They say it like it's a unique thing.

It's cool that Ubuntu is doing this, but so is everyone else.

and this got just randomly announced after much months of silence shortly after fedora 21 got released? thats just a coincidence, they dont watch what their competitor does, of course not.

Ubuntus marketing is a bit like nvidias noadays. Backstabbing FTW!

Yes, except for that this is actual running code and not just a vision.

Sorry. Docker is hugely hyped right now. Your grandma is making tea with her Docker instances. CoreOS is making their own alternative to Docker called Rocket. Canonical is building a layer on top of Docker called LXD(http://blog.tutum.co/2014/12/09/hands-on-with-lxd/). Google and Amazon are making Docker instances easy to use with their systems, start-ups are popping up to do the same.

We're probably going to start seeing the Virtualization giants being raised from their slumber soon(http://www.virtualizationpractice.co...e-linux-29228/)

Snappy Ubuntu is just some fancy wrapping paper.

The thing is that Lennart usually delivers and his solutions are usually used by more people (pulseaudio systemd etc). And i don't have a single doubt that he will also deliver this time.

Canonical on the other hand fragments the ecosystem. Did it with upstart and after quite some time got its shit together and changed to systemd. Also Mir.

                  Time will tell though.

Lennart's vision supposedly heavily involves BTRFS (which is not bad IMO), but could take a while to iron out, on the other hand Snappy packages don't require such dependency so is shipping now... Also Ubuntu would virtually have BOTH solutions available to it since they will ship SystemD anyway and at some point BTRFS too by default.

If Lennart's vision goes as planned and is as good or better than what Ubuntu developed (which was mostly for the phone), then people will switch to that naturally on the desktop and/or server, even within ubuntu itself, if not then this will do.
