For knowledgeable/experienced Linux users one can select their chosen DE at install time (and most would). For newbies/flavor-of-the-month-DE-users, spins allows one to boot a "Live CD" and experience the DE before installing and to decide if this is the right experience for themselves (and easily try another until one "fits"). One can switch DEs later, of course, by installing the appropriate package group(s), but not only does that tend to use some extra disk space (and some people are concerned about every megabyte of disk storage), it may not setup the alternative DE in the optimal configuration that a first install may do with all of it's guided prompts.

A great advantage for Linux is that there are multiple different DEs to choose from. A great disadvantage for Linux is there are multiple different DEs to choose from.

The miracle will be if this mess actually works semi-properly.

Just another example of the "busy work" mentality that permeates the Linux ecosystem, the idea that they mist do something for the sake of being able to say they are doing something.

Just once i would like if a project said "we are done, this project is complete".
