I'm a couple days late to the party, but I think the https://postmarketos.org/ team was probably a driving force behind both the desktop support and the improved ARM compatibility. They've been using Alpine with several desktop options as a replacement for Android on a variety of phones, and I wouldn't be surprised if they had gotten some of their stuff upstreamed.
