Phoronix: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Landing Mesa 18.0, Enabling GLVND

Ubuntu developers are in the process of landing Mesa 18.0 within the "Bionic Beaver" archive for the upcoming 18.04 LTS distribution release. In the process they are also enabling GLVND for allowing the Mesa and NVIDIA proprietary drivers more happily co-exist on the same system...

Why can’t they just wait for release of the packages they need. All the entrrprise distros “release when ready”.

Closed source driver happiness is more important than open source drivers users happiness. The llibegl1 package (has glvnd) breaks Oibaf ppa, Padoka ppa and Debian testing/sid Mesa. Thank you canonical mesa maintainer.
Canonical doesn't support Oibaf and Padoka ppa anyhow. Users are suppose to use ubuntu xswats ppa are they not?

Dunno, but they're not the only distro who: Solus also just pushed 18.0 RC4 into the Unstable repo. And Ubuntu 18.04 is currently unstable as well (theoratically, that is, because it's still 2 months away from release).

That's just the nature of third party repositories. Oibaf and Padoka will simply need to update their packaging to be glvnd-compatiple and problem solved. There's no grand conspiracy here as you seem to be implying. There's just software development.

Fedora went through the glvnd transition. Arch went through it. Both hit some snags along the way which had to be resolved. Now it's Ubuntu's turn. And, related to that, Oibaf and Papadoka's turn. That's all there is to it.

Since Ubuntu 18.04 itself is not released as "ready" yet, perhaps one of the reasons is that this will allow them to test Mesa 18 in context, and accordingly make changes and/or fixes in Mesa 18 before it is finalized.

Canonical is a business-focussed company, and businesses like predictability. Plus there's a lot of downstream distros that rely on Ubuntu, and knowing when the next release is going to be makes it easier to plan.

Do you really expect Canonical to wait around with the thumbs up their backside waiting for whenever they decide to release xorg 1.20? I don't like to criticise FOSS devs, but Xorg haven't been good at communicating their plans with regards to a release schedule of 1.20.

The feature-freeze is in two weeks, and to get this through the proposed pocket takes time, and I'm mostly off next week, so..

Didn't need another reason to never buy anything nvidia but they keep providing.

Im the maintainer of the padoka PPA. I will adapt the packages accordingly, so it wont break padoka come 18.04, its still very early in the process, and i usually wait for AT LEAST, RC releases before i look into it.

That said, it might get a little bumpy in the beginning, lets see how it goes.
