I don't think the point of the improvements is to support a particular game or not to support it, but to have WINE working as close to the real thing as possible. When people there find a problem with Half Life 2 when run on WINE then it could affect other software, too, and needs fixing regardless.

Why then Half Life 2 on WINE when there is a Linux port? Why play under Linux at all? Or why play Half Life 2? The best answer is, because of ... reasons.

That games get listed under the fixes of WINE is just nice and it's what interests users the most, to see one of their favourite applications getting a fix.

I really thought Wine would never go anywhere, but they just keep hammering away at problems relentlessly. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a better Windows XP than the original within the next few years. One piece at a time.

And lucky for the Wine developers, the world seems to have finally dropped IE6. So supporting that to have useful app compatibility no longer looks necessary.

Why use Half Life 2 from Windows when it's ported to Linux?

The answer is simple few answers.
1) There are many Half Life 2 mods that are in fact include windows .dll files to modify Half Life 2. Of course those mods don't work with the native Linux version of Half Life 2.
2) to compare how bad the port is.
3) because some people own the WIndows copy and now on Linux don't want to go out and buy the game again.
