It's not being ignored. The last reply shows that the patch had various issues. No fixed patch ever was provided. The last comment completely ignores all of the comments above and suggests a change which still has all the issues outlined before.

That is your opinion, you know what happens in sane environments... when there is a regression found, if it can't be fixed, it is reverted. Here the regression is not being addressed for 4 years at all. IMHO of course.

EDIT: If we can call that a regression, I think this was broke on purpose, notice how variable for ksh is actually being appended to. They've could done this in 10 different ways, yet they've decided to just overwrite it.
