      A desktop seems unlikely to be supported by FlatPak anytime soon. It (and Snap) are designed to run sandboxed applications from within a desktop... whereas a desktop (especially in the Wayland model) is the ultimate in privileged processes. Basically, you want the user-level packaging aspects of FlatPak, without any of the mechanism used to run the packages...

          Yes, it's a problem, and it won't be resolved until either FP supports root programs, or an alternative comes about that can. I thought FP actually could run non-sandboxed apps, so in that case it should already be able to run root programs.
