Chrome uses a lot of ram, and even a 1G system will get maxed out by Chrome incredibly easy...

It's Chromium (the open source variant), not Chrome.
That leaves room for all sorts of optimization.

Besides. Google has an entire OS running with Chrome as its desktop and they seem to fare fine, even on low-end systems.

Only that high end RPi 3 has 1GB which is also shared with GPU, so at best it is even less then that

I think Ubuntu Mate for Raspberry PI 3 is probably gaining more attraction. I have it on all my PIs and would probably never go back to Raspbian

Yeah same. The ubuntu base is pretty nice. You can pick xubuntu lubuntu or ubuntu mate. Also ROS supports ubuntu a little better imo. It would be pretty cool if you could make a gnome 3 tablet out of a pi but I think you need more ram.

The Pi still has the problem however where running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade slowly breaks the system as time goes on. I have to wipe mine every so often and start from scratch.
