Consider this sits on top of a Linux exposed phone, like Ubuntu Touch or other libhybris, or Mer compatible base.

The Chinese phone company Elephone has just announce they will open source their code and are hoping to attract developers who will make other operating systems and options. They have real nice hardware for cheap prices. A big opportunity for reseller or crew who want a working modern device.

Wow, that's great. I especially love how the notification draw is the notification tray from the desktop. It fits perfectly!

That's why the same apps look different on different form factors. For instance, the Settings app in the video shows the exact same settings from "System Settings" on Plasma Desktop but the layout is a list versus a few groups of icons. Kugler wrote an article on convergence a few weeks ago:

According to http://plasma-mobile.org/what-is/ a plasma phone includes

          Plasma Mobile (a Plasma-based shell)
          KWIN/KWayland
          Voicecall
          Ofono
          RIL
          OHM
          Telepthy

So I suppose a plasma phone don't have anything to do with the distribution. Just like a regular plasma desktop is a plasma desktop regardless of the distribution.

Now if GNOME does the same a GNOME phone / tablet version, we will have GNU/Linux all modern DEs available at our pockets. And as ARM SoCs are not making open source GPU (and others) drivers perhaps cheap Intel SoC devices (very open source drivers friendly) that are twice as fast as ARM ones with Linux native packages (or half with Android java) will have a great opportunity to shine at the phone / phablet / tablet market.

RIL and ofono are heavily tied to the device hardware. Also just putting libhybris and Wayland on Android hardware is not enough, Android GPU drivers need quite some amount of care to get good performance.

The type of convergence Plasma has always used is to have different interfaces for different form factors, but have them all based on a common underlying base and allowing users to switch between them at runtime depending on their needs.

Plasma has had convergence since before UT was even announced.

Looking at the git repository, plasma-mobile appears to be literally the same thing as plasma-active. It seems they renamed the "plasma-active" git repository to "plasma-mobile". So it seems this is a rebranding and reboot rather than a new project.
