I am not quite sure what you are looking for, but just as an experiment I tried to do it (as I understand your question).

Add a new panel to the desktop on the left side, set it to auto-hide and add a task switcher, an activity switcher and a virtual desktop switcher. Worked out of the box.

Load up Gnome 3.16 with "Workspaces to dock" to see a comparison. It isn't even close.

I looked up a few screenshots and I think I know what you mean.

I know the "task switcher" of KDE5 displays a live view of the window, but you are right the virtual desktop switcher does not. I would guess its theoretical possible but someone has to write the necessary plasma widget.
