I want to see further Wayland support.
Also gnome-flashback-session support for Wayland.

Also would be cool to see something like Storage Access Framework from Android be implemented.
They could re-use the interfaces.

That's because most of the core functionality of GNOME is done. KDE is transitioning to Qt5 while also implementing wayland. Currently, GNOME is a more polished setup but there's also less to polish.

GNOME took 3 years to get from gtk2 to gtk3 and took about 1 year for Wayland support. KDE is about to migrate to Qt5 and Wayland support in one and half year or so ( applications already support Wayland, plasma not started as far as I know and kwin in progress ) KDE is pretty fast, but as done the transition to his new toolkit later than GNOME did.

Yes, Gnome is on a stable gtk release, while KDE is moving to a new Qt release. Just wait until gtk 4 comes along.
