      No, that would just create an .iso file in whatever filesystem is already on the flash drive (unless you are referring to some feature of Nautilus I'm not aware of.) You need to replace the entire contents of the flash drive (file system and all) with the contents of the iso, hence the need to use dd or similar.

        You can reclaim the unused space as an additional partition at least. But no, the image isn't setup to look for it for overlaying new packages.
