Phoronix: Linux 6.9 Cleans Up Printk Code While Preparing For Atomic Consoles

The Linux work around atomic consoles and threaded printing remains ongoing. This work is particularly interesting as it's the last major blocker before real-time "RT" kernel support can land. This work sadly isn't ready for the new Linux 6.9 cycle but at least some printk clean-ups are landing for issues discovered during the atomic consoles effort...

It for sure has been a ridiculously long path to mainline RT because the kernel is so pedantic and nitpick any and all edge cases. But it's probably good to be like this. Because once RT is merged, it will probably work and have no adverse effect.

      I agree!

I hope RT work gets more developers and more gets merged. Linux Foundation ought to invest on this instead the crap they invest on.

This is not the VT console, this is all consoles, so it also impacts if the kernel console device is /dev/ttyS0 (A serial device)

This has nothing to do with displaying anything, neither in a framebuffer console nor in wayland.

Finally, this means in 2025 people will finally by able to drive CNC lathes with Linux. Also Linux could be used for producing music for the first time ever.

Le sigh... I wonder how many times we wouldn't have to explain that Real Time != Low Latency if RT had gone by any other name, like Predictable Computing or something.

Real Time has very little to do with low latency and everything to do with predictable latency that may, or may not be low.

Also Linux Pro Audio has been a thing for a couple of decades but inertia and a culture of "Whut u crazy creatives don't use nerd stuff! We are the popular kidz!" has kept it mostly in the dark. See, for instance, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Professional_audio

Pro Linux Audio is much better today than it has ever been though, and as with many other Desktop Linux areas, it was a really janky journey.

In other news, I have eagerly been awaiting the merge of RT since kernel 4.19, maybe 6.11 is the magic LTS number, finally!
