If you read the issue, many people from those companies did assist. They just didnt want to trample over a fellow contributor.

More concretely, Jonas Andahl rebased the merge request to try and get it ready for Gnome 45, but left the decision to the feature developer, who did not have time to push it through.

Earlier this cycle, Georges Stavracos was eager to get the feature in, even made the relevant issues, but did not want to step on an inportant contrbutor's toes.

Ultimately delaying a feature is better than pissing off a contributor who understands the whole problem space and is working on the bigger picture with relevant parties of even having the relevant kernel interfaces developed to improve this feature from a nice to have for 80-90% of people with suitable hardware to something that does not have side effects for anyone.

(AFAIK there is still kernel work outstanding for EG I think the cursor API to allow smooth cursor movements on variable refresh rate monitors. Initial plans were to wait for that to be upstreamed before exposing the feature but it was taking way too long.)

            That's mostly backwards, I'm afraid.

Mutter enables VRR only for fullscreen windows so far.

Kwin allows the user to choose between enabling VRR only for fullscreen windows or even for the desktop.

KDE does also do VRR for some windowed applications. I tested with the gsync pendulum application with a 6800XT - mouse cursor movement gets "choppy" when setting low fps, as the refresh rate is being dynamically tied to it.

This is with Plasma5 wayland and VRR being set to "automatic" in KScreen.
