Phoronix: Linux Terminal Emulators Have The Potential Of Being Much Faster

Prominent GNOME developer Christian Hergert announced he created a new terminal emulator that is twice as fast as the closest GPU-based renderer he's found yet so far on Linux, which was Alacritty. Unfortunately though he currently doesn't have any plans to develop this experimental speedy terminal emulator any further...

There you have it: GNOME devs do not like to work on fast projects.

Don't see anything except for some flat builder and systemd crap (seems like systemd-attitude this guy)

Oh, yes, because all we need is another terminal emulator making use of GPU.

I understand that people are free to use their time as they please, but it has been a long time since how fast your terminal is painted is critical to anything.

            Well, to each, their own.

Agreed. Plus ensures a much worse performance when using via multi-session VNC or X11/SSH.

Portable, Light, Fast... Pick none of them

Well it's easy to write a fast but basic terminal emulator, because you can just draw a bunch of equal size rectangles using instancing at full speed. But performance problems arise when you start implementing features such as emojis, ligatures, and other characters that do not fit in a simple monospace rectangle.

So if you're happy with basic features then yeah you can go a lot faster than most terminal emulators, and that's what foot does. Alacritty chose otherwise and paid the price.
