    AV2 is the next-gen successor to AV1.
The first one is barely out and they're already trying to replace it.

AVM/AV2 however its called now shows some really neat potential, it can get really small if you dont mind lower fidelity. it's really heavy though

They're already developing the successor. That's pretty normal, isn't it?

Alternatively you sack everyone involved and then a few years later go "oh shit, where are all our experts?"

Each major codec generation jump can be between 5 and 10 years. AV1 specification was released in March 2018, over 5 years ago. Hardware took longer, but that is expected - after AV2 is finalised it will still take some time for hardware and other implementations to materialise.

I wonder what they will call the one after that?

Especially since they mention that patent obsessed competition (controlled by cartels like MPEG-LA and Co.) is already ahead in that. They can't sit and do nothing about it.

You should email them and tell them to stop improving stuff until you can catch up.

What an idiotic take. That's how it's done.

To be fair, in the real world, people are still happy with h264 and that's 20 years old. There isn't a huge demand for AV2, but it's interesting to watch it develop.

I guess a massive game company could run software AV2 on PS5/XBox. Maybe it's good for VR or something?
