AVM/AV2 however its called now shows some really neat potential, it can get really small if you dont mind lower fidelity. it's really heavy though

Each major codec generation jump can be between 5 and 10 years. AV1 specification was released in March 2018, over 5 years ago. Hardware took longer, but that is expected - after AV2 is finalised it will still take some time for hardware and other implementations to materialise.

To be fair, in the real world, people are still happy with h264 and that's 20 years old. There isn't a huge demand for AV2, but it's interesting to watch it develop.

I guess a massive game company could run software AV2 on PS5/XBox. Maybe it's good for VR or something?
