                I don't see much of a parallel there. The main reason Canoncial abandoned Unity8 development is that they decided to go in a completely different direction across the board (moving away from phones and "convergence" into more profitable areas).

                  There are always so many angry Linux users. Comments are rarely about the content or the software, it's always about their little clique or something. The huge noise to signal when wanting to read up on changes/improvements are very annoying.

                  I wonder why people even bother writing OSS

                      No. Canonical abandoned Unity8 because they abandoned the phone market and moved towards more profitable endeavors (server and IoT). The situation isn't comparable to GNOME's.
