More than 10 years using Linux and I don't remember the last time, if ever, that I tried to execute a program from the file manager. Maybe you are a Windows user?

Well, nautilus just got rid of its desktop handling code as well (potentially for 3.30). Icons on desktop is one of those things I use regularly for quick access to things I'm working on at the moment. In my home machines, I also keep the launchers for steam and a few of my favorite games/programs sitting there for quick access.

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean other people don't.

Yes, when it comes to raw executables and scripts I don't run them via a file browser, but do that through a terminal. At the same time, I suspect that there are users who want to launch programs directly from a file manager and wanting to remove that ability just because I don't use it sounds selfish.

I'm more looking forward to the power-usage optimizations that are in 3.28.2 or 3.30. My work laptop could use some better battery-efficiency.

Switched to Xfce after Gnome3 has shown its face. Never looked back. Running Xfce4 from Git (100% Gtk3) and am fully satisfied.
