First of all XNU Kernel is a hybrid between the Mach microkernel we developed at NeXT and a modern monolithic kernel allowing the best of both for ObjC messaging using mach messaging services and I/O Kit leveraging C++ and it's underpinnings better suited for a monolithic structure. The FreeBSD area is for POSIX support and all that it entails. It's a modified FreeBSD structure going back to the days of BSD 4.3 at NeXT. Add APFS as the new filesystem and macOS High Sierra is a dream.
