Most likely the more liberal licence, closer to the BSD licence. GNU means GPL, whereas the BSD projects traditionally prefer more open licences.

Oh who are we kidding? We all know the primary reason they chose LLD over GNU Gold is the license. Same reason they picked Clang over GCC.

Really this is a fallacious argument. There is absolutely nothing in OrbisOS that is applicable for FreeBSD. It's an ancient (9.x) version of FreeBSD with a custom AMD graphics interface that has absolutely zero applications to any other graphics core.

Sony gives the FreeBSD project money and considering the amount of money and code given back to the BSDs in the last few years the argument in favour of GNU GPL is weakened substantiaply as it proves you don't need coercion through licensing to force people to give back code.

What exactly have they added thats relevant for a desktop OS?

You see how good MIT-like Licenses work, as Sony mainlined their improvements for LLVM/Clang. If the products that take MIT-like licensed work and add nothing worthwile, the it shouldnt be a problem. If they add alot value on top, why shouldnt they be able to profit from it, you want everything monetised through services instead?

Do you have any proof for these claims? I don't see Sony on the list of BSD donors. Couldn't find any Press Releases about Sony giving back any code, nevermind "substantially".
