Agreed. That was a pretty nice rant on his behalf but likely not very accurate.

And you know that while you're going to have similar OS issues that the current gen consoles the hardware emulation is going to become a lot simpler right?
The PS3 and 360 emu links are scam (trojans in the worst case). I don't think there will be emulators for them any time soon. PS2 and Wii have got decent emulators though.

The PS3 emulator is only able to play a few homebrew titles at very low FPS, the XBox360 emulator is a fake. Try to get GranTurismo 4 running with PCSX2 (PS2 emulator) and tell me if you can get that to work properly (I really want to know, I spent hours on that). Hell, we have not even a proper emulator for the first XBox, and it was based on PC hardware also. You know why? Because the authors of the few emulators that started back in the days say that it is to difficult to get this working. Now go figure how this will work out with the PS4.

I guess you mean this ps3 emu http://code.google.com/p/rpcs3/ ? Wondering how far they are, especially with that cell stuff?

I never said it would be easy, in fact quite the opposite, however just because the XBox was based off of PC hardware doesn't mean that all PC hardware based Consoles are impossible to emulate, just that apparently it wasn't worth the effort for the developers of the Xbox emulators to continue and that an XBox360 emulator hasn't been worth the effort yet, and looking at The Emulator Zone for the actual story on the PS3 emulator it's in progress it just needs a lot more time for the software to develop.

I might look into Gran Turismo 4 but I'm not really that big into racing games.

I've been following the development of the Xbox emulators, and they can run a few specific games. There are two emulators, Cxbx and Dxbx (and there also was the experimental Xenoborg, but it's kind of abandoned). Cxbx has 5 playable games (1 of which is very hard to set up) and 11 games that can be run far enough to get in-game. Dxbx has 4 playable games and 1 that goes in-game. One of the reasons why some games are currently impossible to run is that they use special link-time optimisations.

Then there's also XQEMU that is trying to achieve LLE. So far it shows a corrupted version of the intro animation and some BIOS screens.

So for the sake of argument let's say you're correct... what do you suppose should be done? Microsoft is not going to port their D3D API over to Linux, no way in hell, not gonna happen. You think another API that fixes the flaws of OGL should be developed? Well, that already kind of sort of exists - in the form of OpenGL ES. Not good enough for you? Well, why don't you start developing your own 3D API and then market it to all the major GPU manufacturers so they'll support it with drivers. Let me know how that works out...

Thing is, OpenGL may not be perfect, but it is all we have. And it's cross-platform, not tied to the proprietary interests of only one corporation, which is a good thing.

Yes, most of the quoted ones are this way, somehow I skipped this fact.

                    • There's nothing in the linked story that proves that its running FreeBSD. It could just very well be running NetBSD, MINIX, Haiku or a Sony Made OS.
