Microsoft intent is to rewrite core of its kernel and also did it since this something happened. As a research project(blessed by some MS Research Labs) could improve their understanding of their approach for current kernel research problems and user space heading, but without business support it is forbidden area where a lot of shit happens or there is some deep sea Huawei crossfire due large code trash heading where there is no interest by US government for superiority covered also by corporate projects needed for such shit...

I know! That makes it more advanced than GNOME!

It also has a system tray!

Many ppl will think wine is much faster, but in reality it really depends on your hardware. It requires testing on real hardware to be accurate, and a lightweight GUI linux distro might have comparable overall "performance" to ReactOS. and also since currently ROS can't really run some if not many real hardware GPU drivers, it will depend on the fate of the VBE framebuffer driver on your hardware. if the GDI performance is slow due to the VBE framebuffer acting up on your hardware it will affect every software with lots of movements/animations.
and also the lack of proper SMP support currently will also affect the overall performance in multicore programs, including software renderers such as LLVMpipe.
Also if you don't like ReactOS because "just use Wine anyway" then it's not for you. It's more designed as a compatible replacement to Windows, with driver support and such. Think it like a FreeDOS but Windows. Many people are happy flashing their BIOS and using retro DOS software on FreeDOS, so why not ReactOS also?

I wonder what happens first - WINE got merged inside Linux kernel or ReactOS will be released compatible with Windows 7 at least.

Sad but true. At least Pop!Shell makes GNOME usable.
I can't say that ReactOS has something that would make the download not a waste of disk space It's a cool project for sure though.

Do you mean running applications on reactos installed on real hardware vs wine?
