This was to be expected, Germans always lose every war. Natural born losers are not supposed to have technological freedom.

Meanwhile, Putin wrote a decree for use of Linux by Russian state. Go Russia.

Has anyone found anything with more explanation than the Golem article? Writing this off as just corrupt politicians (even if it is true to some extent) won't help further the cause elsewhere. I wonder if poor training didn't play a part, or what else could be done to improve adoption of desktop Linux among those accustomed to Windows and MS applications.

Really from outside it looks like so? Can you elaborate in which aspects?
Give a German a weak point and they piss on it. Merkel did such as well, accepting refugees was a simple economic decision, as they needed workers for jobs germans simply refuse to. At least they should have asked the EU on how to proceed.

Idiotism in you, padawan. Wanna throw the "racism" around, first check what it means and does the concept would even apply to the situation at hand. There is a bit of difference between being nationalist bigot and racist.

Same thing that happened in Munich happened in Estonia more than decade a go. Gradual switch to Linux was started on all government and municipal levels with a big hurrah but when it became clear that wished budget savings did not manifest themselves and everybody got ton of extra problems as bonuses, everything was quietly switched back to Windows couple of years later. Amount of Linux workstation never exceeded 5% (If I recall one research document from local university correct). "Overnight" switch was deemed possibly too disruptive.

            Problems which cropped up:
            • People who are going to use Linux workstations, would have to be re-trained. Imagine armies of officials needing re-education. New OS, new programs, new UI's. Until they get sufficiently proficient, their working efficiency is going to suffer. Even if new software they are going to use would be behaving perfectly. Which software in early usage phase rarely does.
            • Proprietary solutions (both in user workstations and in back-end) have to be replaced with open-source solutions. Which still demand money because companies winning the procurement are not going to come up with those solutions for free.
            • Admins either have to get proficient in new OS (re-training) or get fired with monetary compensations according to laws and new sysadmins have to be found. Which means more disruptions, probably higher wages being demanded (competition with private sector) etc.
            • Officials who were usually middle aged, did not simply like the idea of "re-learning ways of doing things". It was not simply officials but also superiors of departments etc going upwards in "power vertical". It's the mindset of bureaucracy - putting out minimum amount of work with minimum possible effort, watching that your ass stays guarded at the same time.
            • Some specialty hardware lacked the Linux drivers and software. For example: passport scanners, fingerprint readers (at the time). Some was custom developed (identity card software for Linux) and is still being developed today.
            • Tech support. Compared to MS products, it sucked.
            • list goes on.. Dance around different documentation management systems and their compatibilities etc..

Refuges wont work. At all. They did not come to work, they come to fertilize german women and receive money from German budget. And to vote for Merkel so that can continue. Also to fight for Sharia. Hitler said that german race does not deserve to exist for loosing his war, before he shoot himself in fuhrerbunnker. Merkel took that literally and it is now replacing Germans for more warlike race.

partly right, partly wrong. Bunch only wants social welfare money AND to bring his (since 80+ percent of asylum seekers are adult males of military age) family/close relatives into Europe. After him getting the status of refugee, host country (in EU at least) must provide his family members with living permits as well.

original article (if you happen to speak Lithuanian: http://lietuvosdiena.lrytas.lt/aktua...-ne-dirbti.htm

EU leadership is probably reacting to the demographic trend of people living longer and having less and less children. Which translates as unsustainable financial strain on future social welfare. So, what else to do? Solution is mathematically easy - import immigrants who would assimilate, multiply and start working. Since in glorified heights of their posts they do suffer under certain tunnel vision, they do not begin to understand differences of mentality between different ethnic/religious groups. It would work if they imported Asians like Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese instead of African muslims. Latter simply lacks the working ethos (and moral ethos comparable to us) and pitiful state of their countries of origin, compared to ours, are testament to this. What we are going to get: handful who work, handful who learn the native language(s) of their host country, rest of them are slowly going to concentrate in "no-go" ghettos and become criminal, terrorizing the surroundings.

Illustration for 2016 Malmö, Sweden. Criminals brought to the court of law. Not many Swedish names visible.

                  Shortsighted "revolutionary" view.

Humans lived without public sector for thousands of years, yes. After coming down from trees and until the end of latest Ice Age. Unless you count chief of the tribe, shaman or druid and healers as a "public sector". Of which they were. They did provide community services. When tribes banded together, were allied, conquered and so forth, scope just got bigger and single individuals no longer sufficed compared to populations they had to service. So bureucracy slowly evolved.

Want to see what life without public sector and laws looks like, please travel to Copenhagen, Denmark and visit Christiania. Pretty eye-opening. Feel adventurous, go to some African hell-hole not fully governed by central government. Somalia is a good bet. Public sector and laws are simply being replaced by local warlord, his cronies and whatever you have to pay for 'protection'.

Wars are caused by politicians who usually are not bureucrats but simply spineless, greedy, shortsighted scum.

Taxes are necessary evil. Lets assume you you get sick. Seriously. Would you prefer to die into cancer over 1-6 very painful months or have 50/50 shot at living thanks to chemotherapy - of which each dosage may cost something like 4000€. For some patients weekly. For years often enough. You, sure as fuck cannot allow this sort of expense out of your own pocket for long. Taxes are what make it possible to finance it. Also they finance working organized society as such. Think taxes as lubrication and fuel in internal combustion engine if you will. Stretching things to give you perspective - without public sector, taxes and wars (R&D accelerator) you would not have computer and you could not even read Phoronix.

Private sector companies and workers would keep their money and poor people would have more money from private foundations.

And you would eat exactly what 'near poles'? There are reasons why nobody is living there. Even Greenland which is at considerable distance from North Pole, has minuscule population, dotated by motherland Denmark. Iceland, less than half a million people and still has very little industry/agriculture. Nothing really grows 'around poles' ya know? Think maybe once, before writing your bright ideas down for everyone to see..
