I dont see your huge problem about reverse engineering. First of all there are full featured LINUX drivers out there you can look at for nvidia and amd cards if needed - look at radeon hdmi support, there are still docs missing but it works already. Where are those good LINUX drivers for via gfx chips? The official drivers are pure crap. Luckyly the usage of via onboard solutions dropped very much lately - via users often needed special xorg.conf optimisations in order to see something at all - avoid it whenever possible...
