      Old thread, I know, but I just downloaded nightly from Mozilla and set the environment variable and yet it's running through xwayland. Did anyone actually get it to work and confirmed that it really ran as native Wayland?

        Yes, it works for me under Gnome with GDK_BACKEND=wayland.
