Phoronix: Mesa 11.1 Will Likely Support The Raspberry Pi 3D Support In Linux 4.5

With the upcoming Linux 4.5 kernel cycle there's going to be open-source 3D acceleration for the Raspberry Pi via the VC4 DRM driver that was originally added for Linux 4.4..

This will make the RPi the first ARM SOC with open source 3D, right?

No. Rpi uses VC4, but Adreno and Mali both already have OSS drivers.

Adreno has a driver, but the Mali source was never released. So while there may be a driver it doesn't qualify as "open source" (since you know, the source isn't available)

I think he referred to the Lima driver

But the RPi already had an OSS driver since a few years back /s

On a more serious note, great work Eric. Also kudos to Broadcom for deciding to pay someone to do this, hopefully other companies will decide to do the same, everyone will be better off if they do.

Regarding lima, it is a pitty that libv lost the motivation to do the cleanup he said was needed before releasing the code. The guys at sunxi are doing a great job of enabling AllWinner HW on mainline linux [1] and having an OSS driver for the gpu would be really nice. It should also be noted that mali gpus are still being sold on new hw today (phones and sbc boards) so having an oss driver for mali is still very relevant.

There's hope for complete OSS support of RPi? Meaning: needing absolutely no proprietary blob to boot and fully use the board.

What's still left for this goal to be achieved?

To some extent, Broadcom quickly did the GPU thing because of the backlash surrounding their early nasty lie about them releasing a full driver, and when they did this, they hired Eric (who had not been near anything arm before).

The RPi foundation kind of halfly promised to free even the bootloader and whatnot, but we stopped hearing from that.

The guys who were REing VC4 were never supported in any way, and i wouldn't blame them one bit if they have given up in the meantime.

So much for getting kids to play with assembler again, right?

Could be that that was in email, which i cannot access atm. Google is indeed not too helpful in the quick. My blog entry does mention:
"* There's a big promise of releasing more about the Videocore and at least providing a properly free bootloader."
So some hard statements were made in that direction.

                    Edit:
