Phoronix: Mesa Development Activity Was Up By ~20% In 2019, Just Under 3 Million Lines Of Code

Mesa3D as principally the collection of Linux OpenGL/Vulkan drivers is up to 2,996,270 lines of code (and documentation / associated scripts) within its Git tree! That should put it over the three million mark very soon while the Git activity was up by about 20% in 2019...

With last year seeing the new Panfrost and Lima Gallium3D drivers merged...
    Michael,
any news on what the name of the new (Mesa) Gallium 3D driver will be for Valhal - or will they just continue with Panfrost?
    Mali GPU (Mesa) Gallium3D Driver
Utgard (Mali 400, Mali 450) Lima
    Midgard (Mali T600-T800) Panfrost
    Bitfrost (Mali G71-G76) Panfrost
    Valhal (Mali G77+ onwards) ??

Now that we basically have OpenGL 4.6 compliance, most of Vulkan supported, a large chunk of Intel's new Gallium code implemented, and some pretty critical performance enhancements already established, I predict Mesa development is going to substantially decrease for 2020. But, that's not a bad thing: at least in regards to feature-completion and performance parity, Mesa has a finite amount of work to be done, so every single checkbox cleared off the "todo list" is something to be happy about.

Not sure what you are on about.... even straight up AT&T unix had graphics device drivers with specialized APIs...

The API translation layers are an artifact of Mesa having some elegance and reusablility in it's code...
