There are DP to HDMI2.1 dongles and it looked like some worked in the bug report about it. Only solution for now, but this will mostly affect TVs as most modern computer monitors should have a DP port and additionally this will only really be an issue for 4K+ hi-refresh and ultra hi refresh screens.

VESA claims it's royalty free. MPEG LA claimed that they'd try to impose royalties because DP used things covered by their patents. MPEG LA has since taken that back.

It does not matter what VESA says (they are not the manufacturers lawyers). It matters what the manufacturers lawyers say after reviewing the various claims, and they are not publicly talking (and they should not).

Since the specifications are not public we also do not know what they may say (if anything) about any IP that may be required for correct implementation (if anything is written at all it usually simply states that the manufacturers need to perform their own due diligence regarding any IP licensing)

Buying Nvidia turns out to be the better choice as always. Even under Nouveau.

After reading the comments, only one thing comes to mind. How about reverse engineering the drivers that implement HDMI 2.1 and port the functionality to the Linux open source driver, clean room style?

HDMI has always been the dirty peasant plug, made to milk the nonbrained consumer fools. So, it fits when associating it with the fools buying Nvidia to get shaftend, milked and locked in. Congratulations. Binary Blob Bobby.
