Security and stability! Someone already hinted that open source tends to yield superior technology. True, but that is beside the main point. Driver code has privileges that can mess up your system. Closed source apps or games running in user space is perfectly OK if you want to go down that road but everything concerning the operating system and the kernel must be transparent so that we can all sleep safe at nights.

I play those games because they are fun, and I am not willing to have less fun for some ideal

I also use propietary codecs, flash, and even opera is a web browser because it has more features and is more stable than firefox.
Google earth and picasa are installed too

Intel, Ati, every video driver that's on freedesktop git which has a 3D component
Nouveau was the only one maintaining it's own tree

What are you referring to with "They already are", intel?

They already are. Nouveau was the only driver maintaining their own mesa tree.

BTW, there is no distinction between radeon and radeonhd in mesa. Those are names of the Xorg modesetting/2d accel drivers.

So will radeon and radeonhd be incorporated too?

I'd just like to say "More power to these guys!". I don't currently use their driver, but I'm really rooting for them to get to the point where loss of features/performance becomes insignificant relative to my want of OSS solutions.

Because the reason we like open source is that it usually results in _better_ source. The more flexibility the end user has with what they use, the better. As of now, the best games out there happen to be proprietary. That may change, but right now, that's the way it is.

I don't use open source stuff because I'm an idealist, I use it 'cause it's better.
