    Code:
aticonfig: Writing to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' failed. Bad file descriptor
reads like you have a filesystem problem to investigate.
xorg.conf may be not there, corrupt, broken, truncated, cross-linked or normally linked to another file on another location.

I recommend you verify with an
    Code:
    ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf
from a terminal prompt and arrange an fsck of your root filesystem before proceeding with further experimentation.

sorry if this is a silly question but how do I do that?
this is the output of ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf
        ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???
You can play 3D games with an HD 3870 on UBUNTU HARDY 64 ?
o my goodness - when i try to play wow under wine i get corrupted textures and 5 fps (i tried variaous drivers and xorg.conf / config.wtf configuratuions) though fglrxinfo and glxgears say everything is ok.

Please please post how you made the graphics on ubuntu hardy 64 run!

            1. How and what driver did you install?

            2. How does your xorg.conf look like?

            3. Are there bad graphics functionalities that i have to turn off?

            4. Are there special dependencies I have to install to make it work?

If my 3870 will work with wow allright this week I will praise your name at forum.ubuntuusers.de !!!!!!

don't give it the uuid, make it fsck /dev/hda1 or /dev/sdb3 or wherever your root is hanging around.

Doesn't the partition need to be unmounted? (just checking)

for a simple check without fixing, mounting read only is enough. For fixing you need to unmount it.

I'm running Fedora 8 Werewolf x86_64 with ATI drivers from Livna, and here's what my glxgears is showing. I didn't bother to shut down any apps either, I've got about 15 of them running:

                    [adm1@localhost tmp]$ glxgears
                    72392 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14478.317 FPS
                    73321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14664.114 FPS
                    72321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14464.090 FPS
                    71742 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14348.302 FPS
                    73220 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14643.989 FPS
                    73254 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14650.677 FPS
                    73207 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14641.381 FPS
                    73330 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14665.871 FPS
                    73318 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14663.469 FPS
                    73195 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14638.997 FPS
                    73206 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14641.142 FPS
                    73187 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14637.344 FPS
                    73446 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14689.077 FPS
                    73218 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14643.600 FPS
                    73127 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14625.225 FPS

I run Neverwinter Nights 2 with Cedega, along with Morrowind and Guildwars. Having a blast.

Now where did I put that fedora coffee mug.

                    Cheers,

                    LX
