Why is it that Radeon cannot run good old (ancient) Doom 3 engine games?

    Heh I was having a problem with a segmentation fault when trying to start the Quake 4 Demo just now but then deleted those files from the game directory and then the game starts just fine. I didn't even think about this. Steam runs into this problem from time to time--it doesn't segfault but 3D accelerated graphics won't work with those two libs and need to be bypassed or deleted and use the native distro version of those libraries.

    I suppose this is fine, unless you run into a backwards compatability issue with a newer version of libstdc++.so.6 or libgcc_s.so.1 that causes old games to break? I suppose that is very rare because this Quake 4 Demo 1.0 is a binary from 9 years ago and it runs fine on a bleeding-edge distro.

      Well, I can't go back in time 1-2 years and try it. The current symptom is only missing textures. I can DIY an Arch install and post some logs, if anyone interested.

          Okay... I tried this with both the Quake 4 Demo and Doom 3 in full-screen and windowed mode and I cannot replicate the missing texture problem.

          Perhaps double check that you have the latest Radeon driver and also try upgrading to Mesa 10.4 and Kernel 3.18.1 (has some DRM code changes/fixes). I didn't try it with Mesa 10.3.5 and Kernel 3.17. You can grab the new ones in Arch from repos: "[testing]" and "[multilib-testing]".

            Welcome to OSS. I suggest you submit a bug report, because that's the only way it's getting fixed as like someone else said the devs probably don't play that and they just don't have to.

              I tried the quake4 demo and the first time i started it there were some textures missing.
              I then changed the graphics settings in the game and it then worked as it should.
              I tried many graphics settings since the first change and even default but all work since i changed the settings for the first time and no missing textures.
              mesa-10.3.5
              kernel-3.14.27

              Does the demo work for you?

                Unfortunately I'm not good enough with debugging complicated code like mesa and the kernel, so I can't do that.

                    This was a test install, nothing changed in between tests except for installing ubuntu updates, then fglrx.

                    Arch logs coming soon unless mesa 10.4 indeed fixed it. At the time I tried we had 10.3 only.
