Hey everyone,
I just built a computer and have since installed Ubuntu Desktop 12.10 on for the operating system. My overall goal is to set up my system to perform GPU cracking utilizing oclHashcat-plus, which needs the AMD Catalyst 13.1 video driver version to work. I have two Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970] video cards and want to set things up as to use both for GPU cracking. However, I cannot get that AMD proprietary Catalyst driver installed correctly. Prior to each of the four things I have tried, I have reinstalled Ubuntu just to be sure that nothing was residually preventing the installation from something else I have tried. Also, in all instances I have done a apt-get update && apt-get upgrade prior to any of the things that I have tried below. I have attempted the following multiple times each:
1. Downloaded the Catalyst 13.1 driver directly from AMD and installed via the ".run" file. I tried both the generic version as well as the targeted version for Ubuntu Quantal.
2. Followed the directions three times at wiki.cchtml.com.
- Including using the "Generic Config" command of aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all
- Including using the basic "Minimal Config" (Adjusted for my video cards of course).
3. Attempted to install the Ubuntu-supplied fglrx/Catalyst driver.
4. Attempted to install the driver by utilizing the "Ubuntu-X" PPA.
I have not been successful in getting the driver installed. The only two outcomes that I have come to after trying everything stated about is that:
1. After the login prompt, nothing loads after authentication. I still have the ability to "Right-Click" and manipulate settings, but nothing else in this scenario.
2. When booting the system, I get the error saying "The system is running in low graphics mode." From here the only functionality I have is to drop into a login prompt with CONTROL+ALT+F2, but none of the other options displayed in that error window.
I wouldn't say I am good with Linux, but I am decent. Honesetly at this point I am totally out of ideas. I have spent so much time trying to do this, but have so far had no luck. If someone could help me figure this out, it would be so greatly appreciated!!
