Adobe and AMD announce Flash Video acceleration on the GPU for Windows and Linux
-------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday when Adobe announced its Flash Player 10.1 that'll be coming down the pipe, Nvidia was among the first to chime in saying that its GPUs will be able to accelerate Flash video with GeForce and Ion.
AMD's informed us that it plans to support Adobe Flash Player 10.1 at the same level and in step with the beta release later this year.
"AMD is committed to making the video usage scenario -- playback, editing and transcoding -- a focal point for AMD platform innovation, smartly using the full CPU + GPU assets of our platform to enrich and accelerate the experience,"
At the Adobe MAX event in Los Angeles, Adobe demonstrated a private alpha of Flash Player 10.1 that is supported by the ATI Radeon HD 5800.
Both Adobe and AMD worked with the DirectX 11 API's compute shader and ATI Stream / OpenCL technology to accelerate Flash performance with the GPU.Last edited by tuxdriver; 07 October 2009, 04:38 PM.

I am happy that I now have 3D with my "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3300 Graphics" technology (ab)using Linux 2.6.32-rc3-git1 and radeon git, that's progress, but reading that they are now funding development of propietary software together with the evil Adobe corporation makes me quite sad.
Why not throw more moeny at making KMS & the free software radeon driver even better, eh? That would make any flash player better, including the free software gnash player I (ab)use work more smoothly.

How does working with the DirectX11 APIs imply anything about accelerated performance on Linux?
On the flip side, if they're doing acceleration using OpenCL, that only benefits HD4000 series and newer.
DirectX11, HD4000 ... this announcement benefits a pretty tiny percentage of the population.

Hmm. These guys already have a VAAPI library that works with Catalyst libXvBA, but that page of the site is password-protected. Who is allowed to use this stuff?

Probably pretty buggy so they closed it except for some few selected people who are used to suffer.

But Gwenole Beauchesne also sometimes posts here, so if he reads this maybe he can answer.
