Phoronix: HDMI Forum Rejects Open-Source HDMI 2.1 Driver Support Sought By AMD

One of the limitations of AMD's open-source Linux graphics driver has been the inability to implement HDMI 2.1+ functionality on the basis of legal requirements by the HDMI Forum. AMD engineers had been working to come up with a solution in conjunction with the HDMI Forum for being able to provide HDMI 2.1+ capabilities with their open-source Linux kernel driver, but it looks like those efforts for now have concluded and failed...

VESA should come up with a competing solution with the same features and more, until then hdmi is a necessary evil. Should be inevitable now that HDMI Forum has gotten hubris.

HDMI is kinda dead anyway; the HDMI Alt Mode (over USB) for example will not be developed any further.

So stay away from the HDMI junk and use Displayport instead. I'm fine with that.

Let's hope USB-C will eventually resolve this problem and hdmi will be gone. Good first step.

It's just a shame. It will just mean negative publicity and users going to competing technologies.

Similar issue i think with Dolby Vision and HDR10+. HDR is open while DV is not.

People can start realizing that they are computers and not a religion, forget about trying to stuff their ideological beliefs down everyone's throats and just write software that allows people to use the hardware theu paid good money for to the fullest extent.

How about AMD have their open source driver if they feel that strongly about it and then have a more feature rich closed source driver that expands on the open source capabilities and allows people to make full use of the graphics card.
