    Your ebuild did not work for me, still blocking xorg 7.4.
    I unmerged ati-drivers updated xorg and installed the driver from the ati installer, it comes with a graphical install utility.

    after the install it gave me an error about not writing /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

    I deleted this link and ran the installer again without error.

    After reboot i had to remove RgpPath in xorg.conf and voila
    all is working inclusive compotiting in KDE4.1.3
    My kernel is 2.6.27-gentoo-r2

    Video is flickering less with composite as last catalyst.

      gentoojose, never ever use the installer. Not ati nor nvidia. You fuck up your system that way!
      A lot of stuff does not compile with that afterwards, also, some variables are pointing to the wrong libs etc pp. It is just a big, fat mess. *rolleyes*

      @dscharrer, kde4 (svn) works fine - I just can't turn on effects.
      Downgrading to mesa 7.1 did not help. I downgrade to mesa 7.0.3 now.

        mesa libs are replaced anyway, why do you downgrade mesa?

          I'd also recommend to use the distro's installer method - or at least modify one for the distro instead of using the ati installer. Especially with gentoo. Although the gentoo ebuilds currently don't do anything with ati's custom libdri.so as far as I know. Copying that manually fixed a few problems for me, but not sure if it fixes anybody elses' - I've mentioned it a few times, but not heard back from anybody if they've even tried it or not.

            @Kano as first step downgrading to xorg-server-1.4.2, xorg-x11 7.3

            well - after doing that - it works fine. F*. Why do they talk about X7.4/1.5 support in the release notes?

            gentoojose, I really recommed staying with 8.10 until a real 8.11 ebuild is there.

              Replacing /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so with the ati-provided one dind't change anything for me. What problems did it fix for you?

                @energyman

                you have to use the x740 dirs not x710 when you use packageing.

                  I did have some messages about driDriverExtensions that vanished (this is why I specifically mentioned it in this thread), and also a few instability problems (or simply not starting problems) when using two monitors (no xinerama). Direct rendering was always "no" before I copied the file across.
                  But thankyou, at least I know it's probably specific to me now and may not help others. However, as it works for me, but I've noticed a few others with the same problem, I would be interested in finding out why.
                  I'm currently running gentoo (64bit)
                  xorg-server 1.4.2 (will upgrade that soon enough)
                  xorg-x11 7.3 (will upgrade that soon as well)
                  2.6.25-gentoo kernel
                  e16
                  radeon x1600 (pci express)
                  I do have xinerama initialised, but don't use it (just a personal preference) so not sure of any problems with that. AIGLX is initialised (according to log files). If there's any other info I can provide, just let me know.

                  -- forgot to mention that enabling e16 to use compositing works just fine. I normally turn it off however (personal preference).

                    Guys, does anyone know:
                    1) whether this would flawlessly work on a 780g mobo over hdmi (with sound)
                    2) does it support hardware acceleration on 780g?
                    TIA.

                      @mirv with 1.4.2 and Xorg 7.3 everything works. Stay the hell away from 1.5 and Xorg 7.4 - and stay away from the installer. Lu is already working with the ebuild trying to debug them. Just be a little bit patient - you won't loose anything not using 8.11.
