There is something severely wrong with this if that happened. Unless your having a case of clashing IRQ's the two are really unrelated.

Please post more info on your system

MB, attached devices, raid setup, etc etc.

it wouldn't hurt to post your dmesg as well using pastebin.

I had a play around and i seems it is because i defined..
      Option "RenderAccel"
      ..before..
      Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
..defining them the other way round causes no problems.

Does that make any sense or shall i still post my full specs?

I installed the graphics driver recommended by Ubuntu but it now says that i am using a proprietary driver, whereas before it didn't (even though it was straight from nVidia's website). And anyway, on checking xorg.0.log it still says i'm using "the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture" - where do i get open source drivers which will have EXA enabled? Or should i not bother - the main issue really is how slow Eclipse is - i installed openJDK instead and although there is a slight improvement it's still relatively unresponsive...

That line does absolutely nothing with the blobs they do not use exa or xaa they use their own 2D acceleration architecture.

That option will only work with the opensource nv 2d drivers.
