IBM is screwing it up. With POWER9 it was open, and now with POWER10, is it still open? It doesn't look like that way so far.
Companies that got attracted to POWER because it was open, should they ditch POWER now and look around for other alternatives?
Companies that invested in POWER because it was open got their rug pulled under them. It was open until IBM decided it no longer was, or are they going to open POWER10 like they did POWER9?

POWER8 was open and POWER9 was open, and tbh, the parts within IBM's control are equally open on POWER10.

Unfortunately, IBM was forced to use 3rd party hardware IP to build the PCIe and DDR4 interfaces. If you want to avoid loading 3rd party firmware for them, then you're not going to have a particularly useful computer. Most companies don't care, and so IBM has sold a lot of POWER10 servers regardless.

It's far too late to change what they used for POWER10, and IBM don't have the legal ability to release source code for those 3rd party components.

Right now POWER11 is in the works and since there's no pandemic disruptions it may return to the trend of POWER8/9. The only thing to do is wait.

        I have a dream!

        Intel, nvidia and windows die.

AMD, POWER, ARM and Risc-V take over the cpu market.

Anyone else out there that can make GPUs rises.

Linux, Fuschia and HaikuOS take over.

I'd like to see Haiku run on POWER, and I'm happy seeing their progress lately on ARM.

              Linux, Fuschia and Haiku?

Sir, the future is TempleOS running on modern remakes of the AMD 386DX-40.
