Phoronix: Linus Torvalds Questions New "HTE" Subsystem Looking To Land In Linux 5.19

Being submitted as a new subsystem for the almost wrapped up Linux 5.19 merge window is the Hardware Timestamping Engine "HTE" code. Linus Torvalds though has yet to pull in this new code and has raised concerns around some elements of it...

"So now part of the code calls it "hte" [...]and part of the code calls it "timestamp"."

We do need this! Writing realtime code without high-quality timestamps is annoying, at best.

the "hwstamping" subsystem was raised as a possible alternative name.
I don't love it. What if someone later wants to create a hardware source-stamping or priority-stamping subsystem?

I'd rather "hwts", "hwtimes", "hwtstamp", ... something with HW, T, and S.
