Well... it's a bit hard to do without access to the hardware...

Cavium's MIPS efforts are dead, and the users of these chips all use Cavium's SDK, not the upstream kernel. So it's not a real loss, except maybe for OpenWRT.

nope, usually the linux kernel folks just rename stuff, move arguments around, and if you change some API you should know what you are doing and sed -i s/// all users. It's not rocket science.

As I recall, Cavium tried (18+ months ago?) to get some kernel drivers added for their newer octeon devices, which included some cleanup that might have eventually led to cleanup of the earlier device support, but after something like a dozen versions being proposed, and the acquisition by Marvell, such efforts were ended.
