The passwords are encrypted if you use a master password on Firefox. Other browsers may integrate with the system's key store which is secure too and requires unlocking.

Then again, storing a non-reversible and expirable authentication token is *always* more secure than locally encrypting your passwords with a two-way encryption. Why? Your password is not available locally even after bruteforcing with the former but it is in the latter.
