The MeeGo Project announced last night they will be transitioning to Tizen, a new project from the Linux Foundation and others. Tizen is yet another mobile Linux attempt.

Tizen is a new mobile/device-focused operating system that was announced yesterday and is meant to span from tablets to smart TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Smartphones and netbooks are also fair game. Tizen is being hosted by the Linux Foundation while it's key makers are Intel and Samsung.

What's different about Tizen compared to MeeGo is that the APIs will be based upon HTML5 and other web standards. There will also be a Tizen SDK for those wishing to execute native code on Tizen-enabled devices.

The Tizen stack will be fully open-source software.

The first release of Tizen and its matching SDK is slated for Q1'2012. Initial details on the project can be found at Tizen.org.

It was then said by Imad Sousou on the MeeGo blog wrote that "Over the next couple of months, we will be working very hard to make sure that users of MeeGo can easily transition to Tizen, and I will be working even harder to make sure that developers of MeeGo can also transition to Tizen. I want to personally thank everyone who has participated in MeeGo over the past year and a half, and I encourage you to join us at Tizen.org. We hope to use what we learned from the MeeGo project to make Tizen successful, and I hope to see you participating in Tizen!"
